THERE ARE FIVE SIMPLE QUESTIONS

To the newspapers, of course, these startling developments had much the same effect as a side of beef tossed to a starving mastiff, and by the time the Fourth Estate had finished its meal, there was little left, as Holmes observed, except “the bare bones of fact, which are always more interesting than the speculative meat upon which the gentlemen of the press so vigorously chew.”

The first extra edition, from the Pioneer Press, appeared at ten o’clock that night, and the other dailies, including Pyle’s Globe, quickly followed suit. Holmes read these sensational dispatches immediately and pronounced them “not without certain features of interest.” As far as I could tell, however, the stories offered little in the way of new information regarding the discovery of George Upton’s body, which was attributed by the Globe to a “Mrs. and Mrs. Edward Fitzgerald of St. Paul.”1 There was, however, an intriguing reference to the role played by Holmes and me:
